Lenguas de Fuego
      Larry Gowey

Words between them were hurled

Caustic firebrands launched into

A body of dry leavings

Igniting the dead remains of a

Lifeless tree called love

The fuel of low-lying limbs

Slowly consumed a growing blaze of

Innuendo and suspicion

Becoming a conflagration of contention

Devouring their skin

Laying waste to all it touches

Ashes turn to ashes

Dust turns to dust

Tongues of fire silenced

The death of their last echoes

Lost in the wind

Con Mortuis in Lingua Morta

With the dead in a dead language

Fingertips have gone silent

The hint of your smile

Now blends into

The creases of your face

The air no longer

Sings with your laughter

We are beyond

Words and dreams

You sit

Not speaking

Pondering the past

I ponder the future

Sitting shiva

Poet's Description for "Lenguas de Fuego"

"Lenguas De Fuego" is an argument between two people framed in the imagery of a forest fire, a catastrophe that grows out of control when methods to eliminate the fuels that feed the flames is ignored. The fires start small but as they gain strength, everything in their path is in danger. Our words can create sparks that, unchecked, turn into a destroying blaze, leaving nothing in its blackened path.

LARRY GOWEY

Larry has been writing poetry since he was 13 years old. He writes because he has to. To him, something about getting words written down in one form or another is like appeasing a terrible itch. His inspirations vary with time, place, and person with no particular mentor to credit.
