GEORGE FISHER
Saltwater Souls
We are made from the mist of the wave,
found in the fleeting rainbow,
carved by the flow of the tide.
We dance in whitewash,
and sing in the swell.
We are as calm as the deep ocean,
and as wild as the shore break.
We are not chasers of the sun.
We do not hide in concrete coffins of nine to five.
We bask in the ever-changing moods of the coast,
crying with the sky, soaring with spirits in the wind,
and swimming with the creatures of the deep.
We tell our tales in the smoke of midnight fires,
not broadcast over pocket screens
in the age of wish-away lives.
We are the bridge between Earth and Man,
reminding you there's more to life than what you've become.
We are the catalyst for the rebirth of the old world;
The world of connection.
We are the saltwater souls.
These Days
These days go by fast-
lost in work weeks
for two days freedom.
They used to last forever-
we’d tell tales of futures
and create worlds with forests and streams.
Always living until the streetlamp alarms
called us home.
Then they started to drag-
learning or yearning to live,
endless classes for futures needs.
Always listening to teachers preaching “Their way”
as if we had a choice.
These days go by fast-
you might just miss them if
you don’t slow down to live... (them like you used to) ...
The worlds are still there to be made,
perhaps even this one if you aren’t too afraid.
Poet's Description
"Saltwater Souls" came from rediscovering the ocean as an adult and how it helps heal and center me as a person. It tries to show how the ocean and coastal regions affect certain people who allow it to. I believe it has helped me understand myself and my place in the world, it has helped me connect to the world in a more meaningful way. This poem tries to explain how I now view parts of life differently, what is truly important, and what needs to be let go of in order to grow as people, individually and as a community.
